This Cherry Blossom Card is inspired by the DC Cherry Blossom Festival and the Yoshino Cherry Blossom trees that were originally donated to the United States in 1912 by the people of Japan. The process to create this card came about from a series of six hand sketches of different cherry blossom trees from images around the Tidal Basin at the Jefferson Memorial. Two of the six concepts were chosen and refined in our studio where the engineering of Letterpress Light was applied to create the embossed accents in the image you see now. The visual effects of the tree branches came out as a complete surprise as the ink appears to be broken along lines of the branches through the cotton paper leaving the look and feel of a heavy bark.

The inspiration for this greeting card came about as a desire to make Spring arrive earlier and in anticipation for the DC Cherry Blossom Festival. It’s based on the traditional style of silk painted privacy screens and one that can be found in the the Smithsonian’s Freer and Sackler Museum. Each one made is unique as the cotton paper reacts differently to the pressure exerted by the handmade printing process that was developed by artist and printer, Heather Noss, in her Letterpress Light studio. These were originally sold in a set of six with 1,000 cards sold within the first nine hours of release.
