It’s pretty stressful looking for the perfect DC wedding venue that best expresses your relationship as a couple. With all the different options, how is a bride or groom to choose?! Well, I took a few days and went gallivanting through DC to find all the different art galleries and museums that allow weddings – which was a feat in itself, let me tell you. I had a blast looking at all the best art galleries and museums ranging from traditionally beautiful to uniquely funky in order to find the coolest wedding spots in DC.

Traditionally Beautiful:

The Textile Museum

French doors open up to the expanding 1920s-esque gardens that look as if Gatsby and Daisy are behind one of the many tall boxwood arbors engaging in secret affairs of the heart. Pebbled pathways weave throughout the formal gardens and around a glorious white tent accented with yellow fairy lights that twinkle from dusk ’til dawn. Your wedding is a complete success as your guests mill and wander about the formal gardens and chat in quiet corners.

The two historic houses wherein the Textile Museum lies are the perfect venue for the most sophisticated and stylish of weddings. The entrance, completed with detailed molding and gold lanterns, is the former home of the Museum’s founding family; it was designed in 1913 by John Russell Pope, the famed American architect of the Jefferson Memorial (1943). The Museum was later expanded in 1925 into the adjacent building to hold the Museum’s galleries.

Of course, because the event will be held in a museum, there are certain rules to protect the collections and historic buildings:

• No smoking is permitted within the buildings.
• No food or drink is allowed in the galleries.
• No fresh or dried flowers or plants are allowed in the Museum.
• Only votive candles are permitted, and only in the food-serving areas.
• No red wine or red food is permitted.

The Inside Details:

-Primarily an outdoor ceremony-centric venue. Not much indoor activities allowed.
-Wheelchair-accessible
-Exclusive with Windows Catering Company
-Limited on-site street parking (however, only five blocks north from Dupont Circle Metro Station), no valet available
-No on-site overnight accommodations
-Refundable security deposit: $500
-Can accommodate up to 200 people for standing receptions, 125 for seated dinners

Prices:

-Regular Rate: $3,500 for a seven-hour rental, including set-up and clean-up. Additional hours can be rented for $350/per hour.
-501(c)(3) Rate: $3,150 for a seven-hour rental, including set-up and clean-up. Additional hours can be rented for $315/per hour.
-On-site tent available to rent for: $3,500

Update: The Textile Museum will be moving to George Washington University’s campus in 2014, meaning the space will soon have a new owner.

As I toured the museum, I found that this quaint, simple and elegant venue will leave your wedding guests in a state of enchantment.

National Museum of Women in the Arts

Imagine looking over your delighted guests as you and your love stand on the artfully crafted Mezzanine that frames the marble dance floor below. The band plays a slow ballad beneath you as you make your grand entrance by gliding down the elegantly detailed staircase and onto the dance floor.

Earlier that day, you donned on your wedding dress and sipped champagne as your bridal party got ready in the The Elisabeth Kasser Room which was converted into a bridal suite located on the Mezzanine level. Your hair and makeup was done in the strategically placed bathroom directly next door. You took pictures in front of the large window where you can overlook Washington, DC. Located just a few blocks up from the White House, you feel like American royalty. You then got married in the Great Hall with your loved ones surrounding you or gazing upon you theatre-style. Every candle, flower, light, bow and even the arch where you exchanged your vows were exactly as you had imagined it. Dinner was hosted on the Mezzanine level, an open space where a conveniently placed private caterer room was available to prepare all your favorite dishes. Once every plate was thoroughly enjoyed, your party proceeded to the Third Floor Galleries where your guests had cocktails and made toasts to your newly-made union while amongst art made famous by influential and awe-inspiring women. You and your guests moved back down to the Mezzanine and looked over the bannister to marvel over how the Great Hall, where you had just exchanged vows, was now a dance floor completed with lounge chairs around the sides and a simple but sophisticated bar fully stocked with every drink imaginable.

A bride will never be lacking in choices if she decides to host her wedding in the National Museum of Women in the Arts. From lighting, vendors, catering, set up for the ceremony or reception to everything else that’s important, will be available for the bride to have her every wedding wish come true.

There are a few restrictions practical for every museum (votive candles, please), but the NMWA is definitely among the most accommodating venues in DC. I had the pleasure of meeting with one of the lovely and personable event planners as she showed me around the museum. I left the NMWA knowing that any bride will certainly be taken care of by the wonderful team at the NMWA, because they take customer satisfaction to the next level.

Another perk: the rental fee for the venue is tax deductible! Downside: pretty booked throughout 2013 and most of 2014 – better make that reservation ASAP!

The Inside Details:
-Primarily an indoor ceremony-centric venue. Not much outdoor activities available.
-Wheelchair accessible
-Exclusive list of 25 caterers, six are open to partnering with chefs. (Also, allowed to have all the red wine your heart desires, just not in the carpeted third floor art galleries)
-On-site parking and valet available
-No on-site overnight accommodations
-For a plated dinner, the Great Hall can accommodate up to 180 guests on the dance floor , the Mezzanine level can fit 250
-Price varies during season. (Note: multiple reviews on different sites have said that it’s worth every penny)

National Building Museum

Your wedding will be the event of the season if you choose to have it at the National Building Museum located on G Street. The first thing your guests (which can be as many as 2,000 people) will notice as they enter the breathtaking Great Hall are the eight Corinthian columns reaching 75 feet into the air, each eight feet in diameter. Your wedding will be among the many important events that have been held in the National Building Museum, such as the 1885 Inaugural Ball held for President Grover Cleveland.

Before your party (that must end by 1:00 am, alcohol has to stop being served at 12:00), you can host a more intimate affair with 110 seated guests for an elegant dinner, or 200 standing guests for a chic reception. A caterers kitchen, just off the east court on the lower level, is convenient if you choose to have dinner on the main floor.

Having your special day at the National Building Museum would make a statement about who you are, in a very big way.

The Inside Details:
-Wheelchair accessible
-Has a set list of preferred caterers and vendors (no on-site caterers or vendors available)
-On-site parking and valet available
-Can accommodate up to 2,000 guests
-$$$$ Pricey, pricey, pricey – regardless of season

Uniquely Funky

LongView Gallery

We can all agree that a typical characteristic of a bride-to-be would be “glowing”, but did anybody ever consider that the glow might just come from the Retina screen of her Macbook Pro? Yes, that’s right; today’s bride has gone online.

Pinterest

Let’s play the “how many boards” game. How many boards does it take to plan a wedding? From flowers to bridesmaid dresses, we think between ten to twenty boards is reasonable enough. Through Pinterest, brides can become their own wedding planner. Keep all ideas in one place and when you finally think you’ve reached the permissible amount of pins before you feel like you’ve gone through the entire Internet, congrats! Start planning.

Not only is Pinterest an accessibly large pocket of ideas, but it also lays everything out in front of you and helps you see what direction you’re set out to accomplish. Do you want a rustic touch of antique or a modern affair? Your brain knows, and all the contents of your subconscious have mentally vomited all over your Pinterest boards. Once you’ve grasped what exactly your subconscious wants, anything otherwise has no chance of smuggling its way in.

Facebook

Besides updating your status to “I’M ENGAGED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” you can also use the many facets of Facebook to not only “promote” your wedding, but to keep family and friends in the loop.

Not to be confused with a club promoter, but as a bride, keeping people interested in the main event is a good thing. What if someone were to choose between your wedding and a weekend getaway to Branson, MO? We’d like to assume they’d avoid the latter at all costs, BUT JIC maybe you should frequently rather than not-so update your wedding peoples that this thing is INDEED still happening.

Pop into the “Check-in” feature and tag your bridesmaids at a dress fitting or create an album containing pictures that lead up to the big day. Take advantage of the pre-set website-feel Facebook profiles consist of. Also, if you have family members who live far away, the “Create Event” feature, which is a creative play on an E-vite, can make things such as an engagement party or photo session easier to plan. There is a constant flow of communication with every invited guest within it, making organizing effortless.

Do you love shimmering satin? Delicate flowers wrapped with silk ribbons? Then your style definitely fits with these Victorian Flourish wedding invitations that are created using a vintage fleuron design. They communicate a sense of timeless elegance, one that transcends across the centuries.

Color Combinations Communicate

The scrollwork can be customized to match your wedding colors or done in the elegance of a metallic silver as shown in this example. The custom metal foil stamping gives the scrolling a greater relief and added richness. The fonts used in your Victorian Flourish wedding invitations can also be customized to further personalize your invitations to match your style down to the tiniest detail. Ink colors and fonts chosen will greatly influence the final flavor.

These Victorian Flourish wedding invitations are printed on a lovely bridal off-white, but your paper color choices are as broad as your ink and font choices. The elegance just takes on a different flavor with changes to light pastels or a classic black background. One creates a high-tea elegance, while another creates the freshness of a Victorian spring garden. With the guidance of a professional designer, you can be assured that all the details of your invitation design will blend together perfectly.

Satiny Smooth or Soft Texture?

The thickness and texture of your invitation paper is also important to the overall impression that is communicated through your wedding invitations. This is another area where our print designer’s experience can provide the direction you need to narrow down your choices to those that are most suited to your overall theme.

A Matched Set

Continuing the theme of your Victorian Flourish wedding invitations through to additional stationery pieces provides continuity and encompasses all the events surrounding the wedding ceremony in the same sense of beauty and romance. A response card is a must for accurate counts for your wedding ceremony and reception, but an events schedule printed on matching letterpress cards can be a memento that is as functional as it is beautiful.

Your wedding is a once in a lifetime event that is celebrated with your closest family and friends. It is the day when two lives merge into one. Weddings are the one event in our society that guests take note of the details and remember them long into the future. Every one of those details becomes part of a memory, not just for you, but for them

There are few cities as iconic as Washington DC. As the capital of the nation, the name itself speaks to the richness of our long heritage of democratic leadership. Weddings set in this historic city can tie into that rich sense of patriotic history with Vintage Washington DC letterpress wedding invitations. The vintage style letterpressed images of the Presidential monuments create a stately landscape of architectural elegance. The vintage Washington DC map printed on the interior envelope liner creates a double emphasis of the theme.

Color Can Change Everything

The understated charcoal gray used in this example adds to the vintage feel of this design. A simple change to the ink color of this print can totally transform the look of these vintage Washington DC wedding invitations. Sharp black on bright white would provide a classic but modern look, while brighter colors would connect with the energetic vibe of Washington DC. In the example above we’ve added a splash of color to the stationery set by printing the reception card on a contrasting stationery color. Color accents can be made with ink choices, stationery colors or subtly with color added to the edges of stationery pieces.

Fonts Make a Statement

Take note of the font used on the vintage DC wedding invitations above. The font is simple in form, but increasing the size and bolding the lettering provides prominence for the names of the bride and groom. Just like color, it is important to choose a font that fits with the style of your event. These choices can be greatly simplified when working with an experienced print designer who can make font and color recommendations based on a short consultation with the bride and groom.

The Importance of Paper

The paper you choose for your Washington DC wedding invitations can make a big difference on the final look that is achieved when the design and font type is applied. It is important to see how the fonts and colors you’ve chosen will appear on various types of letterpress paper. Does the paper truly complement the colors and font types? Should it be smoother or should it have more texture? What will it feel like in the hands of your guests when they open it and read it? Each of these individual choices combine together to create wedding invitations that artistically represent the lifetime commitment that will be honored on your wedding day.

Do you love your city? Or hometown? Do you stay connected to your Jewish community and get involved in your temple’s events? The whole weekend celebration was jam-packed with a Shabbat Dinner, Kiddush Luncheon, the Bat Mitzvah Celebration and a Farewell Brunch.

Whether your wedding will be a formal affair with a classic, elegant style or something a bit more whimsical and light-hearted, tailoring the invitations to reflect the theme of the event can set the tone for your event long before it actually arrives. Remember, the invitations will give your guests their first impression of your big day weeks or even months before they witness it.

Springtime and weddings seem to go hand in hand. After all, what’s a wedding without flowers? Since these natural beauties make their first appearance of the year during the spring months, nature’s bounty can almost seem like an extension of the arrangements and bouquets that adorn your ceremony space.

Integrating natural elements like floral and botanical themes into your wedding invitation design is a great way to reflect both the season and your own personal style. Couples planning an elegant, black tie event may want to keep more formal invitation design in mind to reflect the tone of their event. Clean lines, understated colors, engraving and classic script or calligraphy are the hallmarks of a traditional wedding. Copperplate fonts are also a common choice for classic wedding invitations, as is a mixture of copperplate and script. When sophistication is the name of the game, let your crisp colors and iconic floral themes speak for themselves.

Some weddings are less formal, which gives you more leeway when it comes to appropriate invitation design. Vintage elements and bohemian touches can lend an incredibly romantic air to a spring wedding, while fun embellishments in preppy hues create a fresh finish for invitations to a relatively casual event. Whimsical splashes of riotous color and flower prints are also appropriate for springtime events. Weddings with a sleek, modern theme may not typically include floral elements, but you can still bring in spring-like elements with your color choices. Typography will generally take center stage on modern invitations, with fewer illustrative touches.

Remember that your wedding is a day that celebrates the beginning of your life as a married couple, and should be a reflection of your personalities. Your wedding invitations will set the stage for your big day and the expectations that your guests have regarding the type of ceremony to expect, so you’ll also want to keep the theme of those invitations in keeping with the theme of the ceremony itself. Whether you’re married to tradition or a couple of quirky free spirits taking the plunge into matrimony in your own unique way, make sure that your wedding invitations are both a preview of the event to come and a celebration of your personal tastes.

When you’re searching for luxury invitations and just haven’t found one with the right touch of color, consider painting the edges of the paper. It’s done by hand by people who love stationery and creating those unique touches. The process is simple, but tricky. All you need is an ink roller and a steady hand. No machinery required. Although, if you want silver or gold foil leaf on your edges, it may get a little more complicated.

Water Color Technique with Letterpress Text and Green Painted Edge
Creating water color designs on thick cotton paper has improved thanks to innovations in digital printing on thicker papers. These invitations were printed digitally from the original design, with the addition of letterpressed text and a dark green paper backer. The painted edge in a fresh spring green was the final touch. The goal was to create a whimsical water color invitation based on a children’s book set in a garden.

Coral Painted Edge Stationery
A wedding invitation created with antique gold ink script font and a touch of color added to the edge. When you want a hint of pink but not too much!

Gold Painted Edge Stationery
For this luxury wedding invitation we created for a ceremony held in Rome, Italy, the couple wanted something as lavish as their event. We used museum board (4-ply museum board-it’s twice as thick as the 220LB paper) and created a dimpled texture with a letterpress. The invitation was topped off with a copper foil stamp with a custom crest with the couple’s initials.

Red Ink Stationery Edge
This invitation was inspired by a wine bottle and a red, white and black wedding theme. The red painted edge gave it the touch it needed to pull the invitation set together, and was tied together in the end with a deep red belly band.

Silver Foil Gilded Edge
Why stop at a regular painted edge when you can have actual shiny foil gleaming at the edge of your invitation? This beauty was done in shiny silver foil, but foil options come in many colors, from gold to blue to fuschia!

Lilac Painted Stationery Edge

Hot Pink Stationery Edge

Painted edges can add $175+ to the price of average wedding invitation set per piece. For a perfectly elegant luxury wedding invitation, consider using a nice calligraphy font printed in letterpress on a formal size invitation of (6X9) and for a touch of color, paint the edges. For something truly special, carry that theme throughout the set and paint the edges of the RSVP card and all the other inserts. To go over the top, you can use the painted edge color as the envelope liner or use the same color as the RSVP return envelope.

Modern Calligraphy Style

As time passes by and trends change with every season, one thing remains true… the beauty and charm that calligraphy can add to your invitation set. The stroke of a quill spelling out the day you marry your best friend can represent so much. Isn’t calligraphy too traditional or stuffy for my new age wedding, you may ask. Not with our Modern Calligraphy Style! We have captured the essence of calligraphy but with a whimsical, modern typeface. This style can fit a broad range of wedding themes from a super modern chic wedding to a formal black tie affair.

Shiny Gold Foil

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.. but who doesn’t find shiny gold foil printing beautiful!? The gold gilding on this particular set has added so much personality. The navy blue text alongside the sparkle of a foil stamped name is beyond chic. Let us show you what the world of foil and letterpress has to offer!

Thick Letterpress Paper

Do you ever wonder what your guests will do with the invitation AFTER the event? Well no one will want to part with this gorgeous artifact once they fall in love at first feel. The texture and weight of this paper is shockingly beautiful. You will appreciate the cotton texture and deep imprint that any design will have on this 220lb stock.
